The XML-based scripting code in tuxtype is probably the least
clearly-understood code in the program. Basically, it was implemented
by one of my predecessors, and no one currently with tuxtype has much
of a handle on it. It seems potentially very useful, but is also a
case of "reinventing the wheel", much like how tuxtype used to have
its own homemade gettext implementation instead of standard GNU
gettext. It might be a worthwhile project to use an external library
to provide the functionality in scripting.c.

Best,

David
