For tuxmath and tuxtype, the translation files are po/*.po in the source
tree. Offhand, I think malayalam is ml.po but I might have the
abbreviation wrong. Tuxtype also has language-specific "themes" with word
lists and sometimes xml lessons that are under e.g. data/themes/malayalam/.
To understand how gettext-based internationalization works you need to read
the GNU gettext manual, and to some extent the other autotools (esp.
autoconf).

I'm not directly involved in tuxpaint development but I'm pretty sure that
is for internationalization of the tuxpaint website, not tuxpaint itself.
Tuxpaint has its own *.po files in its source tree and uses GNU gettext,
but it doesn't use the autotools build system.
