Dear Gordon,

Thanks for your interest.

We have a Debian Mactel team set up (although it is very little active
per se). It would be good if you would join it:

 https://alioth.debian.org/projects/pkg-mactel/

See also the PTS page:
 https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/macfanctld

You should get the current package from git ("debcheckout macfanctld"
should do it for you), modify the packages as needed (add yourself as an
Uploader) and come back to me. Perhaps you can create your own branch in
the git repo to share your work while not taking risks as you are learning.

I will be able to work as a sponsor for you. You can seek advice on the
debian-mentors mailing list, in addition to the pkg-mactel-devel team.

Finally, you need to browse through the basic doc:
https://www.debian.org/devel/
in particular:
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/
https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/

Kind regards, Thibaut.
