FWIW, I just subscribed to aptitude-devel.
And, actually, I just sent the following this morning proivately to
Daniel, but this could go in the list:
Daniel,
I have a problem with the po/ directory for aptitude...
You can see it with the log of fr.po for instance:

Let's take it in reverse order:

summary: Regenerate PO(T) files after changes in source code
Here, I copied all files from head/ in my build copy and ran:
"rm aptitude.pot ; make aptitude.pot ; make update-po"
...to be sure grabbing all strings from up-to-date source code.
This bumped the number of strings to 1148

I complelted the French translations to 1148t

>>>The French translation went down to 1128t1u !
However, if, from files of "1377:53c4de97b7fc", I regenerated
aptitude.pot again in my build tree....I get 1148 strings again and
fr.po is 1147t1u (the change being a string where you used plural
forms).
The last two changesets were meant to grab back my complete
translation.
So, indeed, it appears that we're both playing ping-pong. For whatever
reason, when *you* update files in po/, the number of strings goes
down and we actually lose translations....
So, who is right, indeed?
Am I doing something wrong somewhere?
