Thanks for the report.
Can you (or any other user with the same combination of tools) still
reproduce this with recent versions?
I couldn't using Debian, and I use this feature fairly often and never
experienced this, and I suspect that many other people also use it and
don't remember having seen other reports like that.
I also tried within tmux (TERM=screen, as in the system/session where
you reported this).
I wonder if it's something specific about that program, or locales.
