It is (might be) because
Old Perl Locale::PO module does not properly handle escape character .

Please check if you are using Locale::PO >= 0.25.

publican from debian package (4.3.2-1)
and liblocale-po-perl (0.27-1) package under sid.

Please check order of Perl library path also.
