I know what you are talking about.
So here is the offer to the general public: ITKSNAP is a rather nice
package -- minimal patches (typically just a Debian-specific default
path setting), rational upstream that adopts patches whenever it makes
sense, moderate release frequency, rather robust code. It is ideal for
anyone who wants to get experience in routine maintenance of a Debian
package.
I'll probably file a bug asking for 'help' later on.
