I've tried it too and I have to say I think that upstream probably
never compiled the code without -DNDEBUG. In fact I've also tried the
original upstream tarball, and it also doesn't compile when -DNDEBUG is
not set. 

I'll just check whether it will also compile in c++11 mode and then
push the changes.
