On first sight, the below freeze felt typical of a char type
signedness, but enforcing -fsigned-char made no changes:

I pursued tracing the hangup down to the function rhyper within
the file CUtils/c_sources/rhyper.c (which does not involve char
variables).  The function implements a very optimized algorithm 
under high risk of being tightly coupled to certain floating
point implementation behaviors.  A numerical analyst may have
better insight about what's going on more precisely than I can.
