Thanks for reporting that, I saw a lintian warning, but I was trying to 
understand why, since I followed [1].
By having another look at that I realized that I confused the sections 
"dh(1) and autotools" and "cdbs with autotools and debhelper"

The latter says:

Similar to short-form dh without need for specific debhelper 
compatibility level (dh_auto_configure not used) and less tight 
debhelper build-dependency (optionally none, see below).

     Build-depend on debhelper (>= 8.1.3) and on cdbs (>= 0.4.93~)

[...]

To ease backporting you can additionally do this:

     Use debhelper compatility level 7 or lower.



So I'd rather change back compatibility level to 7, is that ok for you?
