This is not a good reason. Also switching to Qt5 is a thing.

For some reason I can't really understand my `dak rm -Rn vtk` doesn't
show src:elmerfem.
Anyway, the binaries produced by it don't depend on vtk at all (only
some old versions on sh4 and hppa do). Most problaly the dependency on
vtk there is not needed at all.

That's life. Fix the package. Also it already missed the Jessie
release.
