And with this file, you get the error? I checked it and I didn't found
something related. It is a vanilla Etch catalog file, registering the
catalog, docbook-xml and sgml-data entities. If you receive the reported
issue with this system, please package /etc/xml and send me the tarball.

Hm. I used a clean Etch installation with docbook-xml and deps installed
and upgraded it to Sid. No problems.
