Thanks a lot for your detailed bug report!
I could see it also showed up in version 16.2.37 in unstable. Today, in 
unstable, I upgraded to version 16.3.55 and the bug is now fixed there.

I cannot find out what specific change in the source fixed the issue, I 
think I will try to backport this latest upstream version to stable 
within a few days. I will let you know!
