Actually, this wasn't a bug at all ;-)

These options were deprecated with upstream revision 112 [1].  With that
commit, every single user can now run tf-tool and the fingerprint will
be stored in $HOME/.thinkfinger.bir.  The new options are:

Usage: tf-tool [--acquire | --verify] [--verbose] [bir_file]
  where --verbose and bir_file are optional.

  --verbose defaults to unspecified
    bir_file defaults to ~/.thinkfinger.bir.
