Well, Tor hidden services has been suggested. Others (myself included)
have suggested building something new based on a DHT like Kademlia.
People have been talking a DHT in relation to something like
monkeysphere. Personally, I think it's a huge problem, and at the core
of the project. My feeling is that if we are going to come up with
something new, it should work equally well for global and local
networks -- that is to say, a global network made up of local (mesh)
networks.

Marc Manthey posted this to the list the other day, and it's a really
well refined approach to the issue:

I don't think that DNS or namecoin are really going to cut it, as far
as naming goes.
I know that Mr. Vasile is close to publishing a set of working groups.
I hope that naming and availability is included.
