My issues with smart meter

-It is about 20 feet from where I sit, I read the wifi signal is powerful
and near continuous. It could be a safety and health issue.
-These meters I read are capable of monitoring specific appliances in your
home. It would know when the oven is on, blowdryer, microwave, how often
they are used, without your consent. There is a huge amount of data mining
potential including the ability to figure out the schedule of the occupant
etc, this data can be made available to a government or businesses. It is a
major invasion of privacy.
-Owners of condos, or apartment renters, who are unlucky enough to own/rent
the property right next the utility closet are exposed to EMF from up to
dozens of smart meters because the meters are usually grouped together.
This means much higher emf exposure to that occupant can also mean that
these meters will have effectively reduced the value of the condo owners
home significantly.
-Power can be cut off remotely by the utility company.
-The smart meters were advertised based on convenience and claimed that the
would save energy. They simply move energy use from one time to another time
which doesn't save energy, at least not that significantly.
-My biggest issue though is that the occupants are denied the right to say
no or defend themselves, especially the condo owner/ apartment renter with
25 smart meters right on the other side of his bedroom wall. Not cool
-A lot of meter readers lost their jobs.
- I don't see a single benefit except to the utility company, data miners,
governments, advertisers etc.

I mean I make my wifi open and available to myself, guests and people
visiting nearby. I do to others what I hope they will do to me, when I need
wifi somewhere else. :)

Well, I use Linux on all my machines, and mostly use encrypted ssh
connections.

Does this mean that anyone knowing the protocol of the smart meter can track
your power consumption and use it to discover when you are at home?

I do not do it to help people optain privacy, I do it because it is hassle
free and make sure I can help my fellow citizens without requiring them to
ask for permissions to get help. :)
