There was a plan to support MediaGoblin in FreedomBox.
MediaGoblin is currently in Debian experimental.

But since then, federated applications based on the ActivityPub
protocol have been taking off and MediaGoblin has fallen behind
in implementing ActivityPub. I think PeerTube is more promising
than MediaGoblin on the long term.

BTW, PeerTube only supports video hosting for now, not images,
hence not an exact replacement for MediaGoblin. We might have to
add something like PixelFed as well to compensate.

And the usual answer for why it's not in FreedomBox yet - because
there's no Debian package for PeerTube yet. Unfortunately for
Debian, a lot of these new federated applications are being
written in Ruby on Rails and NodeJS, with applications having
hundreds of small packages as dependencies. The Debian packaging
for diaspora*, another federated Ruby on Rails application has
been going on for more than two years. :(
