IMO that is indeed a big problem as rpi-update should only be used by kernel
developers as it essentially amounts to running their 'git master' repo, which
can break any commit.
You could/should use either the kernel packaged by the raspberry pi foundation
or the one from raspbian.org. The latter is packaged by a DD (plugwash), but
the former is usually more up to date.
