We had this before, I just cannot find the solution:

This comes when I try to log-in through plinth. I can ssh into the
box. 
Before this I used aptitude to update the system (running on testing)
and to remove mediawiki (incl. mariadb). Then I did a shutdown -r now.
On plinth I have been (half) logged-in but could not perform any action
(that gave the error 500). So I logged out and tried to log in again.

The "status log" report does not work as it directs to a page on the
freedombox. To access it I would have to log-in...

/var/log/plinth/status.log contains:
Important is probably this one "PAM account management error:
