X/Y modem upload problems

Hi all

I am trying to upload an image to the Fx35-xxlsi. I have who computers next to 
eachother, both running identical software (minicom 2.1 and sx 0.12.20) both 
on Gentoo. One machine (Intel Celeron) cannot upload the image but can run 
the gdb and the other (AMD64 3200+) can upload the image but can't run the 
gdb. Both have both hardware and software control switched off nd their ttys 
output is identical....

Could someone please give me a clue as to where to begin to try fix this?
