you are correct. term size >= 25 lines, then status bar appears. thx!

yes. and in a 'real' xterm, all's OK ...

but, using osx's Terminal.app, even with term declared as "xterm" or
"xterm-color", i see problems as reported.
hmm ... you're on to something.
checking also with "iTerm.app" ... is't ALSO OK
