Some fixes to multi-byte character strings

Hi developers,

the following patch allows me to deal better with UTF-8 consoles in
minicom. I have tested it with and without the "-R" (iconv) conversion
feature.

Previously UTF-8 extended characters did not work without "-R utf-8" and
when the -R option was specified, the UI translation wasn't shown
correctly unless it was plain English (just ASCII characters).
