The fact that OP is getting NAKs at all on the xmodem transfer is peculiar. Provided the serial cable is sound and not too long, and there's functioning flow control, there shouldn't be any errors. That, along with the total lockup, suggests a hardware or kernel problem to me. Minicom and SSH might be red herrings.
