indeed we could provide a .desktop file for SPM8... meanwhile just start
it from cmdline as

spm8-matlab

or just in your running matlab

addpath('/usr/share/matlab/site/m/spm8'); spm

heh -- same face of missing .desktop file. start in cmdline via

MRIConvert

Contributions are very welcome, BTW -- if you have a spare moment to
cook up some icons/.desktop files
