Have you tried changing ownership on the /proc/bus/usb/*/* node to the
nut user? That should allow usb_claim_interface() to work.

I haven't had a chance to look over it much, but I think I saw some
hotplug scripts from Arnaud somewhere that change ownership
automatically when the USB UPS is plugged in.
