Debian packaging (from which the hotplug scripts were originally taken)
if we used a user instead of a group?

If we decide to change this, I would also like to propose an interim
nut-2.0.5a release to fix this issue in the stable version and maybe some
other minor issues that have popped up since nut-2.0.5 came out.

Although this is not a security problem, I agree with you that this is the
number one problem people currently have with configuring a USB connected
UPS. We do however have to realize that this probably requires updates to
startup scripts for various distros. At least one I know of (openSUSE),
will change the permissions on the USB port in the startup script (where
using the udev method would be much cleaner).

Best regards, Arjen
