guys,

A bit off topic here, but since this issue already has a history here:
serial connection to the SCD, the never ending story ...

- the intel D945GSEJT mainboard (ICH7) has two serial ports with
onboard connectors which require a ribon cable to the external DB9
connectors in the case. I tested 5 cables, but none works. whereas I'm
not sure if it is a cable problem. this is what dmesg says when
booting (with 2 onboard ports). OS is Centos 5.3:

Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 4 ports, IRQ sharing enabled
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
serial8250: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
00:03: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
00:04: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

Linux helios 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue Jul 14 06:39:56 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

- the dealer says its not a cable problem and handed me a digitus pci
card with 2 serial ports on it. needless to say with this card it
doesn't work, neither. dmesg says:

Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 4 ports, IRQ sharing enabled
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
serial8250: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
00:03: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
00:04: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:05:00.0[A] -> GSI 20 (level, low) -> IRQ 50
0000:05:00.0: ttyS2 at I/O 0xd000 (irq = 50) is a 16550A
0000:05:00.0: ttyS3 at I/O 0xd008 (irq = 50) is a 16550A

ttyS2/3 at IRQ 50 ?!

[root at helios ~]# setserial /dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
[root at helios ~]# setserial /dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
[root at helios ~]# setserial /dev/ttyS2
/dev/ttyS2, UART: 16550A, Port: 0xd000, IRQ: 50
[root at helios ~]# setserial /dev/ttyS3
/dev/ttyS3, UART: 16550A, Port: 0xd008, IRQ: 50

the card came with a driver source code for linux, but it looks so
crappy I don't dare to install it (the documentation already gives a
bad impression)

and, the best thing: when connecting the rs232 cable to the serial
card, the load increases: from -1.0 to -2.0A :-(

- the 220V PC that gets a serial connection to the SCD runs Fedora
9.0, dmesg says (basically the same as centos):

Serial: 8250/16550 driver4 ports, IRQ sharing enabled
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
serial8250: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
00:0a: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
00:0b: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

- could it be an OS problem (difference between Fedora 9 and centos
5.3) ?
- any magic parameters to setserial for ttyS2/3 ?

any help appreciated.
