of course, I also have ideas for console user ;-)
but without the PSP and its facilities...

 1) from the YaST "Change Installation Media",
 update the MGE repository
 2) reinstall nut (using update)
 3) call "/etc/init.d/ups stop" and "killall -9 newhidups"
 4) configure nut files (in /etc/ups) as per the instructions
  of the MGE+NUT HowTo:
  http://opensource.mgeups.com/install/mandrake.htm
 5) adapt the configuration files rights, ie:
 chown -R root:nobody /etc/ups
 chmod 0640 /etc/ups/*
 5') unplug / replug the USB cord of the UPS (on the PC side)
 6) launch nut:
 /etc/init.d/ups start

And that should work.
