Thanks for the help guys, got it working:

# ./upsdrvctl start

Network UPS Tools - UPS driver controller 2.1.0
Network UPS Tools: 0.28 USB communication driver 0.28 - core 0.30 (2.1.0)

Detected a UPS: Tripp Lite /TRIPP LITE UPS
Using subdriver: TrippLite HID 0.1 (experimental)

# /usr/local/ups/sbin/upsd
Network UPS Tools upsd 2.1.0
listening on port 3493
Connected to UPS [z2ups]: z2ups

# /usr/local/ups/bin/upsc z2ups at localhost ups.status

Also used a article (basically the same thing as you suggested):

Thanks again

kernels where you have to rebuild the entire kernel, not just

Zoltan: you may have to check the system logs to find the exact USB
VID/PID for your UPS. Most likely the VID is 0x9ae, and the PID might
be 0x1 or 0x2001 (from memory, not sure).
