Now, an interesting twist to your comment about another usb package: if I
remove the usbhid module, the error message from nut changes to "No error"
but with the same stale behavior. (plus my mouse stops working)

I think this may depend on devfs v. other stuff... *hopefully* this is
not relevant. I'm running 2.6.18, a local build of the debian package with
customized config.
