uh, right. I was off doing another update for Lenny...

looking a bit at the trunk's changelog, I would guess this is a
regression. not dug much
for the time being, adding the below line in ups.conf (in the [ups]
section) should fix it:
subdriver = phoenix

if you can, you should also give a shot to the trunk:
      svn co svn://svn.debian.org/nut/trunk
      autoreconf && ./configure && make

@Alex: it's not documented in the manpage
