It turns out it's in APC's own documentation -- page 14 of the 2200/3000
RM XL models' installation and operation guide, for example.
This is also indirectly implied on the APC protocol page
<http://www.networkupstools.org/protocols/apcsmart.html>: you send
the UPS a '+' to tell it it has one more battery pack connected. '>'
(which is described on that page) will tell you how many packs are
currently connected.
