Thanks for your quick reply. It was the missing udev rule file:
/etc/udev/rules.d/52_nut-usbups.rules
Since I originally installed the software as non-root this file
never got copied over. Sorry for ringing the alarm too early.
By the way, the nut package is great and I have used parts of
it a lot on Solaris systems for a long time.
