A new kernel is the most likely culprit, but you might be able to get more log messages by setting the LIBUSB_DEBUG environment variable.

At the moment, we don't have a lot of experience with libusb1 and libusb-compat. When it works, it's just like libusb-0.1, but if not...
For the permissions issue, is your "nut" user a member of the "nut" group?
