I'm not sure either, but you could compare it with strace output from "getent passwd nut".

It is the literal from "./configure --with-user=ups..." 

Although it can be overridden with the "-u" flag, I am not sure if that would help. (We sometimes recommend "-u root" for debugging permission issues with the driver, but then the driver might create a socket that upsd can't read without a similar "-u root".)
