Speed of syncing several folders at the same time vs sequentially

I'm doing a big imap resync from gmail after my UID validity pointers
crapped out.
It looks right now that having
maxconnections = 1
is faster than syncing 6 folders at a time.
How does the maxconnections code work?
Should it fork off 6 python processes, or is that 6 threads to download the
6 folders at the same time
Is it offlineimap that is actually being slow or gmail for those who have
tried it before?
Thanks,
Marc
