umask of messages

Interesting that you are seeing the same change.  As I noted before, in 
my case, my older messages had the expected 644 permissions.  Was there 
some change in the last two months that could be causing this?

As far as explicitly applied permissions, I would think either 600, 640, 
or 644 make sense.
