In case there's some bogus state I've tried my mercurial folder, thus:

  there2here(MD/OLD/2012/hg) -> OLD/2012/hg
  there2here(MD/hg) -> hg
  here2there(OLD/2012/hg) -> MD/OLD/2012/hg

and it makes the local OLD/2012/hg folder but pulls no messages still.
