Any mail to root, what?  If you want to read emails, you can use mutt
for instance.  If you want to fetch emails using IMAP protocol for
offline reading you can use offlineimap.

I am not really familiar with Amazon solutions, but if you have a
console access and you know how to install and configure programs you
can run any program you want.
