OK, I tried various combinations of the following packages in an attempt to
reproduce the configuration I had in late June/early July, when things were
definitely working:

alsa-base_1.0.4-3_all.deb alsa-utils_1.0.6-1_i386.deb
alsa-base_1.0.5a-1_all.deb alsa-base_1.0.5a-3_all.deb
pciutils_2.1.11-11_i386.deb alsa-utils_1.0.5-1_i386.deb

I even downgraded my kernel from 2.6.8 to 2.6.6 (what I was using over the
summer). However, none of these things fixed the problem! I'm reasonably sure
this isn't a hardware issue because the card continues to work just fine
under SuSE. The awesfx package hasn't changed since March so that can't be
the problem. I'm not sure what else to check. Any suggestions?

In 1997 a group of programmers started writing a desktop environment
to fix a travesty they didn't create. Their program promptly found
its way onto un*x systems everywhere. Today, still opposed by a
software monopolist, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you share
their vision, if you know you can help, and if you can connect to
internet, maybe you can join... the K-Team.
