Generally the preinst is the right place to rename configuration files.

However, I have just realized that this doesn't matter here because
the alsa-base maintainer scripts do not in fact unload and load
any modules.  Hence they do not need to store and restore mixer levels.
And they don't.  (Exception: the postinst does a "alsactl store"
presumably in order to ensure that there is an initial copy of
asound.state .)
