no, all codec modules were present. however:

I installed module-assistant and also-source and then rebuilt the alsa
intel drivers. Everything now works [1]. Obviously, I guess I'll have to
rebuild these drivers the next time the kernel and modules are updated
but that should be fine. However, it does indicate that there is
something wrong with the current situation?

[1] actually,  rebuilding the drivers did  allow sound to  work but it
    worked  with ever  increasing volume!   this was  fixed  by adding
    'model=dell-m42' to the alsa modprobe options.
