There is something wrong with the sounddaemon gnome uses. Is it
puleaudio or esd. Just try to set averything to alsa

To do a meaningful test do as follows:
Switch to console via <STRG> <ALT> <F1>
Logon as user
Run alsamixer and check for muted Masters and PCM's. Just unmute
everything.
Run "mplayer -ao alsa /my/favourite/music.mp3"

put
deb ftp://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/ testing main
in your /etc/apt/sources.list
Run apt-get update && apt-get -t testing alsa-utils alsa-base oss-compat
The corresponding drivers are in kernel 2.6.3(0|1|2) which resides
in testing as well
