You have to compile the foreseen driver for your soundcard. But
aren't the internal speakers shut off mechanical by plugging the
headphones/speakers?

1.0.18 was uploaded to experimental, because we have an API change
in the packages. It can be uploaded to unstable when Lenny is
released, though.

# apt-get install -t experimental alsa-source

Read /usr/share/doc/alsa-source/README.Debian. To find out which
drivers to compile have a look at
# lsmod | grep snd
# cat /proc/asound/cards
