Bingo. It thinks my MIDI keyboard is an audio device.

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [U61            ]: USB-Audio - USB Oxygen 61
                      M-Audio USB Oxygen 61 at usb-0000:00:02.0-7, full
speed
 1 [NVidia         ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
                      HDA NVidia at 0xfe024000 irq 21

Not quite sure how to resolve this, other than unplugging it, rebooting, and
then plugging it back in, and remembering not to reboot with my midi
keyboard plugged in.
