Yes, probably.

With the level to 0 but the control to ON, there is the ugly noise (with
module removed from kernel). Turning off the control stops the noise
completely.

Well I already tried [1] and [2] and got no reply at all...
(I can't find the messages I posted on these lists, though)
The subject was
beeps with incorrect frequency / volume
posted on alsa-devel on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 and on alsa-users on Mon, 26
Oct 2009. The problem at that time was a bit different, but in essence
the same, i.e. beeps not working correctly.
