Same problem on my Dell XPS L501.

I've tried a live ubuntu 10.10 cd and unexpectedly it works out of the
box. All jacks and also speakers works fine. Looking at the modules,
ubuntu loads snd-hda-intel with a pached version of alsa 1.0.23. So,
ubuntu seems to have fixed this problem in alsa-base package.
