Playing music in banshee or vlc. It works for an indeterminate length of time (about 5-15 minutes and then cuts, but the programs still appear to be playing sound

I got rid of pulse audio, and that didn't help. I recently upgraded from Wheezy (where I never had a problem) and Jessie worked right until the last kernel upgrade
