could you please send the output of

ps xuaw | grep bacula-dir

 - after reboot
 - after the connect with bat
 - after /etc/init.d/bacula-dir stop
 - after /etc/init.d/bacula-dir start

Sounds like the director might be hanging, it could be interesting to
see if the PID changes and what state the process might be in.
