I have no problem with merging environment variables in two places, but
setting reasonable defaults for argparse is, in addition to everything else, a
sensible thing to do. But just for the sake of specification:
* initialise (suitable) commond line options for argparse from the
environment and document this behaviour in argparse
* the data merging function should have access to the environment even if
it doesn't do anything with it (yet) → so include it in the functions
signature
All I want to achieve is that the merging behaviour is predictable, easy to
document and that it takes advantage of whatever the standard library offers
already.

That's perfectly fine by me. If you are running out of things to do feel free
to write a manpage ;)

I would very much like to organise a hangout too, but I guess it will be a bit
difficult to find a time that suits all three of us, given that we are now in
maximally different timezones. So we might just go ahead and plan a meeting
between the two of us. Contact me directly for details please.
